What it’s about?
A LONG-LOST DAUGHTER. AN EXPLOSIVE SECRET. A LETHAL CONSPIRACY.
Ex-Delta Force soldier Jack Ford is trying to put the past behind him. But when he receives a letter from someone he hasn’t spoken to in thirty years, claiming he has a daughter, he can’t resist investigating for himself.
Soon he’s on a plane to China, a country he hasn’t returned to since witnessing the atrocities of the Tiananmen Square massacre. But on his search he stumbles upon a document which both the Chinese and American governments are desperately chasing. Now Jack is trapped in an impossible dilemma: save his daughter or prevent a new world war where thousands will lose their lives.

What I think:
This is a fast-paced thriller that hooks you right from the off.
The narrative is split between American politicians and the CIA, Chinese leaders and Jack Ford, who unwittingly finds himself caught in the middle of an increasingly dangerous situation.
Jack is a great action hero – former spy, former soldier, he’s been decorated for bravery multiple times. He witnessed the atrocities of Tianenmen Square in 1989 and the consequences of that day still haunting him. He is cunning and skilled and well-trained which makes him more than a match for the Chinese operatives he finds himself up against.
I love how contemporary this novel feels – the President of the US is a Diet Coke swigging fool who wants to assassinate foreign leaders and is more interested in golf than national security briefings – sound familiar.
The book is full of Chinese wisdom which Jack is never sure whether it is genuine or from a greetings card.
The pieces of the story and the different perspectives build up gradually so the reader, and Jack himself, learn what the importance of the secret memo are and how everything ties up with Jack’s experiences in China years ago. Jack has to work out who he can trust.
This is such a compelling novel – once you start you are definitely going to want to keep reading as the danger levels increase.
