Popsugar Reading Challenge 2020 Book 32

Prompt: A book with “gold”, “silver” or “bronze” in the title

This is such a great category and the Goodreads group had so many suggestions. I had A Snowfall of Silver by Laura Wood on preorder so when it arrived it was the perfect choice for this category.

What it’s about?

From Goodreads:

A snow-dusted love story.

In the Autumn of 1931, eighteen-year-old Freya Trevelyan runs away from her home in Cornwall to follow her dream of becoming an actress.

When she is invited to join a theatrical company about to head out on tour, Freya thinks the path to success is clear, and, amidst all the glamour and bustle of stage life, she finds – for the first time – a place to belong. But can reality ever live up to her expectations? What if her life – and falling in love – turn out to be nothing like she planned?

An enchanting coming of age romance about following your dreams – even when they aren’t quite what you expected.

What I think:

Everything about this book is wonderful. It is utterly charming and achingly romantic.

The story is told by Freya – “running away” from Cornwall to stay with her older sister in London she plans the perfect running away outfit, packs a jam sandwich and sets out to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress.

Freya is so confident and enthusiastic and witty. Her voice rings clearly through the book.

She is determined to have adventures and live her life to the full. She wants to take every opportunity that comes her way and experience movie-style true love.

The 1930s theatre world is the perfect setting. The supporting cast are diverse – glamorous and ambitious leading ladies, womanising leading men, grand dames, the jook has all

This book is a follow up to A Sky Painted Gold which tells the story of Freya’s older sister. I must confess that I haven’t read it 🙈 I preordered this having read Under a Dancing Star which was one of my favourite books from last year.

It’s fantastic YA historical fiction that I would have loved as a teenager and still do.

And the cover is just gorgeous! Highly recommended.
