Prompt: a book set at a resort or hotel
Sleep by C. L. Taylor is book I actually bought last year on holiday but didn’t get around to reading. It’s been sat on the TBR pile ever since. As I’m not buying books for myself in July and trying to clear some of the pile before it topples over! it’s the perfect choice for this prompt.
What it’s about?
From Goodreads:
All Anna wants is to be able to sleep. But crushing insomnia, terrifying night terrors and memories of that terrible night are making it impossible. If only she didn’t feel so guilty…
To escape her past, Anna takes a job at a hotel on the remote Scottish island of Rum, but when seven guests join her, what started as a retreat from the world turns into a deadly nightmare.
Each of the guests have a secret but one of them is lying – about who they are and why they’re on the island. There’s a murderer staying in the Bay View hotel. And they’ve set their sights on Anna.
Seven strangers. Seven secrets. One deadly lie.
Someone’s going to sleep and never wake up…
What I think:
This is a book about fear. And grief. And anger.
Anna and the seven hotel guests are coping with big emotions. And when a storm leads to them being isolated in a remote Scottish hotel, things come to ahead.
Anna is completely consumed with grief after a horrific accident changes her life and that of of colleagues. Looking to to escape, she heads for a remote Scottish Island to work at a hotel and try to find peace. Suffering from insomnia and haunted by the accident she is becoming increasing paranoid.
The group of guests are also all looking to get away. Grief, loss, PTSD are among the factors for choosing to stay at the remote hotel, and group of guests arrive with a lot of baggage.
When a storm arrives and the hotel owner dies of a heart attack stress levels rise, arguments happen and the tension increases.
Anna is convinced that one of the guests is trying to kill her to get revenge for the accident. But is she just paranoid or is everyone a suspect?
This builds up to a thrilling finale and some great twists along the way to keep you guessing.
