Look Up!
By Nathan Bryon and illustrated by Dapo Adeola
Published by Penguin
We missed the author event with Nathan Bryon and Dapo Adeola held at our local Waterstone last summer as we were on holiday, but we managed to grab a signed copy of Look Up! when we got back.
Rocket is mad about space! She has her own telescope for stargazing and dreams of being an astronaut, star-catcher, space-traveller like her hero, Mae Jemison.
She’s super excited about a meteor shower and encourages everyone to watch it. Even her older brother Jamal who is always looking down at his phone.
There are so many things to love about this book!
Rocket is feisty and fun. It’s great to more diversity in children’s books. The fact that it also celebrates the achievements of inspiring women of colour is great for all children to see.
The relationship between Rocket and Jamal is funny and heart-warming. She is so pleased when her finally switches off his phone and shares her passion for the meteor shower.
Rocket inspired her whole community to come outside and look up. To experience the beauty of nature and the stars- something we should all be doing a bit more of.
The Little Monster’s favourite bot is when Jamal isn’t looking and gets soaked by a puddle.
He looks so grumpy!
I really love this book and it has made the Little Monster want to get a telescope – might just take him to the science museum instead!
