Popsugar Reading Challenge 2023 Prompt #20

Lessons In Chemistry has been recommended to me by so, so many people and has been on my TBR forever. I bought a copy of the hardback when it was first published and picked up a copy of the independent bookshop exclusive paperback an author event with Bonnie Garmus. I can not believe I waited to read this!

What it’s about?

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

But like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo.

What I think:

I’ve said it already! But I honestly can not believe it took me so long to read this book! I absolutely loved it.

I can’t remember being so invested in characters for such a long time.

Elizabeth Zott’s story is interesting in so many ways. The sexism and misogyny that she faces as a woman in science and then again when launching her cookery show is extraordinary. Her no-nonsense responses and complete dismissal of anyone she thinks is being ridiculous is often amusing. She refuses to compromise in any aspect of her life.

I loved her relationship with Calvin. Their connection is so deep, they are truly soul mates. I was sobbing with her.

The dog is an absolutely brilliant character – what a skill it is to bring his voice alive.

I was lucky enough to meet Bonnie Garmus and her her speak about the book and there was so much love for it.

Sometimes, much-hyped books do not live up to their expectations. But this ine absolutely exceeded them. Absolutely brilliant book.
