From Amazon:
In honour of King Charles III’s coronation, this once in a lifetime history book for kids tells the story of a young prince who has been heir to the throne since he was just three years old. But what do we know about our new king? Come along as we embark on a royal journey like no other…
This incredible book traces Charles’ life, from his investiture as Prince of Wales and his time in the navy, to his extensive charity work and now his accession to the throne. Going beyond just the basic facts, young readers will love learning compelling and lesser-known information, like before becoming King, Charles was a magician, plus information like what being king actually involves.
What we think:
It’s Coronation Weekend! So, to celebrate, we are sharing our bank holiday royal read.
Last year, the Dept for Education commissioned a special book on the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II. As part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, every primary school child in the UK was given a copy of their own.
We couldn’t resist adding the accompanying biography of King Charles to the Little Monster’s collection.

This is a great way to introduce children to the new King. There are lots of snippets of information about his life and interests that are written in an easy to read and friendly style.
There is a fantastic Royal timeline that places the new King as a part of history going back to 925 CE and the reign of Athelstan followed by a timeline of the Kings own life.

The rest of the book is divided into different sections, with each double page spread covering an aspect of the King’s life and interests, including his role as Prince of Wales, military service, The Prince’s Trust and his long-standing interest in conservation and the environment.

His marriage to Diana is mentioned only in passing with a focus on his children and grandchildren.
There are lots of interesting and random facts that illustrate the wider talents and interests of the King. He has an environmentally friendly Aston Martin and a frog named after him!
The final page is a selection of quotations from speeches the King has made in the past, which gives children an insight into the kind of values he holds dear with a focus on compassion and service.

The illustrations are absolutely beautiful with charming pictures of historical events and very cute animals, including the King and Queens rescue dogs, Beth and Bluebell. I love the pastel theme and the nature motifs that fill the book.

Overall, this is a very accessible, child-friendly companion to the historic events they may be watching on television. There are a lot of coronation books put there, but this is definitely one of the best.
