Popsugar Reading Challenge 2023 Prompt #15

Sing along if you know the words…

“We are never ever ever getting back together
We are never ever ever getting back together
You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me
But we are never ever ever ever getting back together”

Stick in your head? You’re welcome?

What it’s about?

When their now famous ex-boyfriend asks them to participate in a teen reality show, two eighteen year old girls—one bent on revenge, the other open to rekindling romance—get tangled up in an unexpected twist when they fall for each other instead in Never Ever Getting Back Together by nationally and internationally-bestselling and Indie Next Pick author Sophie Gonzales.

It’s been two years since Maya’s ex-boyfriend cheated on her, and she still can’t escape him: his sister married the crown prince of a minor European country and he captured hearts as her charming younger brother. If the world only knew the real Jordy, the manipulative liar who broke Maya’s heart.

Skye Kaplan was always cautious with her heart until Jordy said all the right things and earned her trust. Now his face is all over the media and Skye is still wondering why he stopped calling.

When Maya and Skye are invited to star on the reality dating show Second-Chance Romance, they’re whisked away to a beautiful mansion—along with four more of Jordy’s exes— to compete for his affections while the whole world watches. Skye wonders if she and Jordy can recapture the spark she knows they had, but Maya has other plans: exposing Jordy and getting revenge. As they navigate the competition, Skye and Maya discover that their real happily ever after is nothing they could have scripted.

What I think:

Jordy’s sister has married a prince, thrusting him into the limelight. He becomes the star of a reality TV show that links him up with his ex-girlfriends – the winner gets the chance ti rekindle their romance.

This was a pretty cute, fun read.

It’s pretty clear that the only one Jordy really loves is himself! He is arrogant, conceited, and manipulative. Before the girls have even met each other, he is lying to them and setting up rivalries.

Of all the girls in the show, the two with the longest and most intimate past relationships with Jordy are Maya and Skye. Skye seems open to actually giving Jordy another chance, while Maya is determined to show the world what he is really like. Jordy was cheating on Maya with Skye, while Skye had no idea, so things get pretty heated pretty quickly.

When Maya and Skye get a chance to put their differences aside, they find they have more in common than they thought, and their friendship becomes something more. There’s definitely romance on the show – but it’s not where the producers expect to find it.

Jordy is absolutely horrid – he is literally the most toxic kind of entitled young man. He is so insincere and gaslight the girls he dates into thinking they are the problem.

Maya and Skye’s voices become more distinct as the book goes along. I must admit I was more rooting for them to take down Jordy than whether or not they got together. I had a real sense of satisfaction at the end.

Overall, I enjoyed this – a fun read with a great cover.
