Now the Little Monster is learning to read, and absolutely loving it, we are starting to add some chapter books to our bedtime reading. We read a couple of chapters every night and work our way through the book. Picture books have not been side-lined – we still read and re-read them, buy them and borrow them. They are great for independent reading and of course some of them are firm favourites. One of our first chapter reads is the 13 Storey Treehouse and we have loved it.
What it’s about?
Who wouldn’t want to live in a treehouse? Especially a 13-storey treehouse that has a bowling alley, a see-through swimming pool, a tank full of sharks, a library full of comics, a secret underground laboratory, a games room, self-making beds, vines you can swing on, a vegetable vaporiser and a marshmallow machine that follows you around and automatically shoots your favourite flavoured marshmallows into your mouth whenever it discerns you’re hungry.
Two new characters – Andy and Terry – live here, make books together, and have a series of completely nutty adventures. Because: ANYTHING can happen in a 13-storey treehouse.
What we think:
This book was the perfect first choice for a chapter book. There’s still lots of illustrations and most if the pages have little writing.
The chapters are short and the story is pacey. The illustrations are witty and there’s definitely some humour fir older kids/adults.
This is exactly the book that young kids would write It’s full of crazy situations and wacky characters. If you can imagine it then it is in the book.
The stories are funny and silly and any danger is comic and quickly resolved. The Little Monster was genuinely laughing out loud throughout the book.
This is the start of a great series – we already have the next books lined up ready to go.
