Welcome to the reality game show that’ll scare you to death! Have you got what it takes to last the night?

Five contestants must sit tight through the night in dark and dangerous Umber Gorge caves, haunted by a ghost called the Puckered Maiden. But is it the malevolent spirit they should fear… or each other?

As the production crew ramps up the frights, secrets start to be revealed… these teenagers have hidden motives for taking part in It’s Behind You! and could some of them be… murder?

 

 What I think:

I love a good YA thriller – and this is a really good one.

This is really well paced with a slow build up to nail-biting and at times horrifying climax.

5 teenagers head to Unber Caves to face a night alone with the fabled Puckered Maiden – an evil spirit believed to rip the heart from her victims. The haunted caves are a terrifying location for the next episode of the reality TV show It’s Behind You.

The contestants have all got different motives for being on the show. Marla is looking to boost her acting career, Abbie is an avid ghost hunter, Python is a superfan with a huge online following, Lex is looking to escape and Liam’s motives remain a mystery. They all want to survive the night and be in the running for the prize money.

But there are underlying tensions everywhere producer Jackie is desperate for the show to be a success and will do whatever it takes to get the ratings. Local towns people do not not want the caves being messed with and are trying to scare away the crew.

This is a really dark and creepy book. The description is fantastic and you can perfectly imagine the darkness and mystery if the caves. The atmosphere is increased with the macabre models and mannequins that have been installed in an effort by a previous owner of the cave to turn it into a tourist attraction. Sinister laughter echoes, models move and flicking lights cast sinister shadows.

The characters are engaging from the outset. Told from Lex’s point of view, she comes across as arrogant and determined not to be liked. But she hides a vulnerable side as the reader is really rooting for her.

This is a great thriller with lots of horror elements that will keep you reading desperate to find out who survives. There’s lots of twists to keep you guessing and some gruesome shocks along the way.
