An Eye For An Eye

What’s it about?

A killer running rings around the police. A detective spiralling out of control.

DI Kate Young is on leave. She’s the force’s best detective, but her bosses know she’s under pressure, on medication and overcoming trauma. So after her bad judgement call leads to a narrowly averted public disaster, they’re sure all she needs is a rest.

But when Staffordshire Police summon her back to work on a murder case, it’s a harder, more suspicious Kate Young who returns. With a new ruthlessness, she sets about tracking down a clinical, calculating serial killer who is torturing victims and leaving clues to taunt the police. Spurred on by her reporter husband, Young begins to suspect that the murderer might be closer than she ever imagined.

As she works to uncover the truth, Young unravels a network of secrets and lies, with even those closest to her having something to hide. But with her own competence—and her grip on reality—called into question, can she unmask the killer before they strike again?

What I think:

Well this is a good read!

It’s so compelling I stayed up later than I planned reading. And there are a few places where I absolutely gasped in shock!

DI Kate Young is brilliant but traumatised. First on the scene to an horrific crime earlier in the year she is back at work but suffering from PTSD and relying on medication to get her through the day.

When a local businessman is killed Kate and her team are sent to investigate. It’s clear to Kate from the outset that there is more to this crime than meets the eye. Witnesses and family are lying and with her superiors looking over her shoulders Kate is careful and and justifiably paranoid.

When a second man is killed it becomes clear there is a potential serial killer on the loose. And how is Kate’s husband involved.

This is a clever mystery that unravels slowly. The reader is with Kate and her team all the way through the investigation. With the benefits of hindsight the reader is given a lot of the clues you need to work it out. There were a few moment real “ohhh” moments where the penny dropped for me.

Kate is a fantastic character. She is thorough and intuitive. She trusts her team and they respect her.

Her struggles with PTSD and the details that emerge about her life (no spoilers from me) make her empathetic and real.

The conclusion to this investigation is both satisfying and sad. You can understand how Kate feels that justice is a complex concept as she finds her sympathies divided.

The book ends with a great cliffhanger that will hook the reader in and make you want to read Kate’s next investigation.

This is a gritty and compelling read with a complex mystery and fascinating characters. Highly recommend.
