A Soul for a Soul

By Carol Wyer

What’s it about?

The syndicate have taken everything from her. It’s time to take them down―or die trying.
DCI Kate Young never meant to shoot Superintendent John Dickson at the reservoir that night―even if, as a scheming corrupt cop and head of the shady syndicate, he probably had it coming.

But now Kate has photographic evidence that someone else knows her terrible secret…

Tormented by guilt and the voices of the dead, Kate is desperate to unmask the rest of the corrupt officers before her own sins catch up with her.

When DI Harriet Khatri, awaiting trial for the murder of Kate’s mentor, claims she was framed by Dickson’s syndicate, Kate reluctantly agrees to help in the hope of finding answers.

Meanwhile, DI Emma Donaldson finds herself on the hunt for a double murderer―a man who incapacitates his victims with a powerful narcotic called Devil’s Breath. Desperate to measure up to her role-model boss, Emma finds herself hurled into the deep end in more ways than one…

While Kate’s grip on reality wavers and the syndicate closes in, and with the mystery killer taking a special interest in Emma, could this be the case that defeats both detectives?

What I think:

This is the fifth book in Detective Kate Young’s quest to take down the Syndicate, a shadowy group of corrupt police officers involved in sex trafficking.

This book begins with Kate grappling with her conscience and a promotion. Her team have also taken new roles and are investigating other cases. Morgan Meredith is leading Operation Moonbeam which is still investigating trafficking, but not getting anywhere fast.

This is a complex read as there are essentially three different investigations going on. Kate becomes convinced that DI Harriet Khatri might have been framed and is quietly carrying on an investigation to try and see if that is a real possibility, Morgan is investigating the trafficking and Emma is leading a team investigating the murder of a woman in the town.

I really enjoy the way that Wyer writes. Although the story is complicated it is always easy to follow who is where and what they are working in at any one point.

We particularly get to see the inner workings of Kate’s mind, and how the voices of Dickson and Chase act like a demon and angel on her shoulder, helping her decide on the best course of action.

I liked spending more time with Emma leading her first murder investigation. She is working hard to impress Kate and build her own reputation as a detective as well as maintain her relationship with Morgan. She is such a strong woman, and highlights the complexities of working in such a high stakes job.

There were definitely some twists I did not see coming and the pace of this book really picks up as events come to a head and investigations reach their conclusions.

I thought this might be the last in the Kate Young series. The bulk of the main mystery has been solved, and it has taken a significant toll on in Kate’s personal life and mental health. But you never know! Wyer has set it up nicely for Kate to return in the future. And if she doesn’t, I would love to see more of Emma and Morgan.

This has been a great series. If you like complex thrillers and corrupt police, definitely read this series from the beginning. You won’t be disappointed.
