Library Friday

Haven’t posted a Library Friday post for an absolute age! So here’s three books that the Little Monster and I picked up this week – 2 for me and 1 for him.

For me:

Mrs Porter Calling by A. J. Pearce

This is the third book in the Emmeline Lake series that began with Dear Mrs Bird. I love the first two, so I’m really looking forward to this installment in Emmy’s adventures.

What it’s about?

London, April 1943.

Emmy Lake is an agony aunt at Woman’s Friend magazine, doing all she can to help readers as they face the challenges of wartime life. With her column thriving and a team of women behind her, Emmy finally feels she is Doing Her Bit.

But when the glamourous new owner arrives, everything changes. Charming her way around editor Guy Collins, Emmy quickly realises the Honourable Mrs Cressida Porter plans to destroy everything readers love about the magazine.

With her best friends by her side, Emmy must work out how she can bring everyone together and save Woman’s Friend before it’s too late.

Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid

This has been on my TBR since it was released, but I was waiting for the paperback. I walked into the library today, and there it was – and I am the first person to borrow it. Some tennis fun to coincide with the Wimbledon finals this weekend.

What it’s about?

Carrie Soto is fierce, and her determination to win at any cost has not made her popular.

By the time Carrie retires from tennis, she is the best player the world has ever seen. She has shattered every record and claimed twenty Slam titles. And if you ask her, she is entitled to every one. She sacrificed nearly everything to become the best, with her father as her coach.

But six years after her retirement, Carrie finds herself sitting in the stands of the 1994 US Open, watching her record be taken from her by a brutal, stunning, British player named Nicki Chan.

At thirty-seven years old, Carrie makes the monumental decision to come out of retirement and be coached by her father for one last year in an attempt to reclaim her record. Even if the sports media says that they never liked the ‘Battle-Axe’ anyway. Even if her body doesn’t move as fast as it did. And even if it means swallowing her pride to train with a man she once almost opened her heart to: Bowe Huntley. Like her, he has something to prove before he gives up the game forever.

In spite of it all: Carrie Soto is back, for one epic final season. In this riveting and unforgettable novel, Taylor Jenkins Reid tells a story about the cost of greatness and a legendary athlete attempting a comeback.

For the Little Monster:

Spy Dog: Secret Santa by Andrew Cope

This Little Monster is really getting into early chapter books. They are simple enough for him to read and understand by himself, there are reader friendly font and still illustrated, but they feel grown up. Writing this is an absolute art! This week’s choice is rather unseasonal.

What it’s about?

LARA is a SPY DOG for life, not just for Christmas . . .

But this December LARA (that’s Licensed Assault and Rescue Animal to you) and her pups Spud and Star are hot on the trail of an evil computer hacker. Stanley Strange plans to hijack Christmas! Can the super spies catch Stanley before he goes crackers and makes an explosive getaway?
